Robert-Jan Smits, director-general for research and innovation, tells the Science|Business annual conference the European Commission is to launch a public consultation on the successor to Horizon 2020 in the autumn.

Euractive reports that Commissioner for research, M. Moedas, said “My expectation is that this (the European Innovation Council) would form part of the proposals for the successor programme to Horizon 2020”. Article here.

Members of the Science|Business Network say the new council should act like a venture capital investor rather than a government agency. Science Business Network also states the following: “Spur regulatory reform to speed innovation - The EIC would systematically analyse obstacles to growth in emerging sectors. It would not have the authority to act on its own, but would be a well-informed, trusted voice in government councils on behalf of innovators. It would create a fast track, not just for money, but for market access.” More info here.
